An article recently appeared in the Al-bany Democrat-Herald, Albany, Ore., about the difficulty of finding skilled workers in today's labor market. This article brought to light the declining number of qualified tradesmen in our country. Over the years, the trades, once encouraged as a viable career option for young men and women who choose not to pursue a university education, have been deempha-sized in our schools. The following is a letter by Richard Kellum, AWS District 19 director and owner of Willamette Welding Supply in Albany, in response to that article.
