Friction Stir Welding of Armor Grade Aluminum Plate

A program was conducted by General Dynamics Land Systems, Inc. (GDLS), and Edison Welding Institute (EWI) to determine if friction stir welding (FSW) could be used to join armor aluminum Alloy 2519-T87. The alloy, known for high strength and superior ballistic performance, is being used on the Marine Corps' Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV). Unfortunately, certain 2519 weld joint configurations made with traditional arc processes (gas metal arc welding [GMAW] and gas tungsten arc welding [GTAW]) have not been able to pass the necessary ballistic qualification test. The inability to pass the test prevents many weld joint designs from being used in the vehicle structure. Failure of 2519 welds during ballistic qualification has been attributed to relatively low ductility when compared to other aluminum armors.
