'Hyperion' of Cal Poly S.L.O. Takes SAWE Best Student Paper Award and Wins Undergraduate Team Aircraft Design Competition

Team D .O.M. Aerospace of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, won the SAWE Best Student Paper Award at the 2003 International SAWE Conference. The team was also awarded 1st place of the 2002-2003 AIAA Undergraduate Team Aircraft Design Competition for the second year in a row and in five of the last eight years. Named the "Hyperion" after the "Titan of Light" in Greek mythology, the 3.3 million pourtd biplane was designed as an Ultra-Heavy Lift Aircraft (UHLA) capable of moving a 1.2 million pound payload 5000 nautical miles at 450 knots or carrying 10 M1-A2 Abrams tanks.
