In today's world of very good computer capability, systems engineering approaches, and loads of history to rely on, why are there so many major programs still seemingly having design problems associated with weight? Well, that is a very good question. The teams and teams of designers all trained in the art of applying systems engineering to their program still struggle with the basics of keeping the design on schedule, within budget and meeting the operational requirements, especially weight. Why is this happening so often, and why are the designs having such problems with weight?
