Long-time Member of the SAWE's Hampton Roads Chapter, Lawrence G. "Digger" Robertson passed away on February 7, 2010, at the age of 87. Digger, as he was known to all his friends and family, was born in 1922, the youngest of seven children. He was a lifelong resident of the Virginia Peninsula in the Hampton Roads area who spent nearly 43 years at Newport News Shipbuilding (now Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding) in Newport News, Virginia. In addition to his long distinguished career in shipbuilding, Digger was also a US Navy veteran of WWII. During his Navy service aboard a landing craft support ship, he saw action at the battle of Okinawa and participated in the occupation of Japan. After the war, Digger graduated from General Motors Institute in Michigan before joining the engineering ranks at the shipyard.
