Scholarship Programs

The SAWE gave three scholarships this year, two from the children/grandchildren of members scholarship fund (Schwab Fund) and one to the children/grandchildren of members from the Frank Fong Memorial Fund. Each of the winner's respective school has received $1,000 on their behalf. The two funds' award criteria are the same except the Fong Fund requires a major in Engineering. The winners were chosen from nine eligible applications. Alexis S. Balinski, daughter of Steven Balinski from the Capitol Region Chapter and his wife, Dawn, is entering the University of North Carolina as a freshman majoring in Journalism/International Business. She graduated from Patuxent High School in Lusby, Maryland, where she was elected chief editor of the high school yearbook, captain of her varsity swim team for two years, and state qualifier for four years. Alexis also achieved a 3rd degree black belt in Tae Kwan Do and worked as a paid Senior Instructor. She traveled to South Carolina and Costa Rica to volunteer with local Sea Turtle conservation groups. She volunteered for the League of Women Voters, Calvert Country Green Team, Christmas in April, Special Olympics, and Best Buddies.
