A Path to an Enduring Career in Mass Properties

As an active member of SAWE since 1971, I now look back and reflflfl ect on a successful career in mass properties. It all started as a summer intern in New York City, at a company supporting ship design and building programs, to eventually retiring from Government service after 31 years at the US Department of the Navy, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). I presently work as a consultant, part time, at CSRA supporting US Navy programs while continuing to share my knowledge with the ship design community. My journey was greatly enhanced by many individuals who shared their knowledge and experience, and in the process mentored me along the way. As we all know the fi eld of Mass Properties Engineering is not a program offffff ered at universities or colleges, but rather adapted from associated engineering or architectural fi elds. Therefore, great value is placed in “on-the-job” training along with specifi c tailored training, but the cornerstone of all of this is the mentoring by individuals who are willing to share their knowledge and experience. In my opinion, the key is to have a willingness to learn, ask many questions, be accountable and maintain attention on the details.
