In recent years, the filmpress has nearly ousted the size press as an applicator for starch solutions. Only packaging papers requiring very high starch penetration have remained the domain of size presses. A similar development is anticipated for the application of the filmpress as a coater. In previous years, blade coating was considered the sole economical procedure of high-speed coating. Today, papermakers may in each case choose at option between the filmpress or blade coating whichever process appears more economical. This round table focuses on state-of-the-artfilm press equipment application technologies and the associated mechanical-surface treat- ment Specifically, the merits' demerits and limitations of the process will be identified and an outlook will be given on future possibilities. Seven short contributions will cover 1. applicators (Dr. N.-O. Bergh). 2. technological fundamentals (R. Knappich). 3. problems with film coating - visualization of critical parameters (R. Urscheler) Following this, the influences of 1. binders (Dr. D. Glittenberg) 2. pigments (W. Kogler) 3. surface treatment (U. Rothfuss) will be outiined in the light of a number of coordinated trials conducted on three different pilot coating machines, a verificationof the results obtained from an industrial plant and from calendering trials in a pilot plant In conclusion, the author undertakes to outline. development trends of filmpresses (R. Knop) which are desirable and can be implemented over the near term.
