Ever more stringent environmental mandates for the discharge of treated effluents as well as the need to continuously control the performance and operating parameters of effluent treatment systems to safeguard their smooth and stable operation call for the increasing application of online measuring systems. Unlike its usually very time-consuming and expensive conventional counterparts, online measuring technology permits flexible adjustments to continuously comply with limit values and quickly react to peak loads. Despite their widespread use, little information has been available so far on practical experiences of online measuring systems in the paper industry. A survey has been conducted among 10 paper mills currently operating a total of 26 online measuring systems at 33 different sampling points of their effluent treatment plants. Being adequately serviced and operated under suitable conditions, the online systems turned out to be valuable and mostly reliable tools contributing significantly to plant stability. The high costs and frequently poor quality of the maintenance and repair services provided by suppliers have been identified as the major weak points of the systems.
