The constant competition between coated and uncoated papers is the driving force behind quality development. Despite rising quality requirements with respect to optical properties and printability, uncoated papers have been able to stand their ground in the marketplace with respect to coated papers. This applies to special SC and LWC papers as well. The original use of fillers in SC papers, i. e. to increase their weight, has given way to functionality. Fillers and filler combinations have become an essential component of the raw materials for papermaking. Continuously rising shares of fillers make it necessary to optimise them with respect to their brightness and lightness, specific surface area and porosity in such a way that they decisively influence the quality properties of the papers. Just as the quality requirements and new materials used to produce SC papers have changed in the course of time, new, optimised fillers have also been developed. Nowadays, fillers, just like coating pigments, are being customised to paper-specific parameters and adapted to the fibre composition.
