To a weather analyst looking at this map, the early afternoon of May 11, 2016, showed two significantly different air masses: a cold one in western Canada with gusty northerly winds and temperatures ranging from the 30s to the 50s, and a warm air mass in the southern United States characterized by southerly flow and temperatures in the 80s. As we've learned from previous issues, the southern edge of the temperature gradient helps to define the location of the cold front.
