Shropshire Union Canal: Middlewich to Autherley Junction

The ten-mile Middlewich Branch of the Shroppie has four locks rising just over 40ft from the Trent & Mersey. After Middlewich the canal is totally rural and the closest it comes to a village is Church Minshull, which has the Badger Inn but no shop. In windy weather this stretch feels quite exposed as much of the canal runs along embankments above the River Weaver, which it crosses on an aqueduct.
