From Great Haywood Junction the Trent & Mersey Canal heads north-west to Stone before rising to Etruria, once the Potteries capital of England. Here you can turn off for a delightful diversion on the sleepy Caldon Canal. After Stoke-on-Trent, the only city on the Ring, you pass the summit through Harecastle Tunnel and then it's a steady descent back to the Cheshire Plain.
