Studying the Guarani Aquifer System: securing supplies for millions

A shared desire to ensure the sustainability of South America's transboundary Guarani Aquifer System (GAS) has motivated four countries -Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay - to collaborate in developing a common institutional and technical framework for managing and preserving the GAS for current and future generations. The seven-year project, 'Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development of the Guarani Aquifer System', began in 2002. A key aspect of the project involved expanding and consolidating the scientific and technical knowledge base.
