Putting the 'MM' Back into CMMS

In today's maintenance environment, the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is one of the most important tools for proactively managing maintenance needs. These systems have become more complex and capable in the last several years, but the main reason for purchase - Maintenance Management - has been lost through updates, upgrades, and re-implementations. As a result, most CMMS users feel their systems have failed to deliver the desired results. This trend of disappointment is directly related to the lack of Maintenance Management information contained within such systems. In many cases, the CMMS is being used but is not producing the quality of information expected. Almost invariably, an evaluation of current work flows and processes reveals a lack of established processes or a failure to adhere to the established ones. Common problem areas that must be addressed include a lack of training, too many codes to choose from, and options that provide little or no value to drive Maintenance Management decisions.
