Many utility managers and wastewater professionals believe that odors are the biggest roadblock to successful biosolids use or disposal programs. They reason that if biosolids odors can be reduced so the public does not perceive them as a nuisance, other public concerns, such as safety, disease, pathogen exposure, and "the disgust factor," also will dissipate. Will such biosolids problems disappear that easily if odors disappear? This remains a significant question for most wastewater treatment facilities, because to a large degree, the odor problem has yet to be solved.
