Desalination: Opportunities and Challenges

Water scarcity in the U.S. and around the globe is becoming a significant problem Vdue to limited availability of freshwater resources and the high cost of transporting fresh water from distant sources to water demand areas. This situation has led to a renewed focus on developing seawater and brackish water as alternative sources of potable water. In addition, water infrastructure energy use and the carbon footprint of water consumption have both emerged as critical issues. Therefore, water and energy nexus implications are integral to the feasibility of developing seawater and brackish water.
