Major program deliveries and some cancellations or delays have resulted in the 2006 edition of the world submarine market survey showing a dramatic fall in the number of submarines under construction over last year. The number of submarines projected for the 10 years between 2007 and 2016 has fallen from 91 to 77, a reduction of 15.4 percent, bringing the projected number uncomfortably close to the 74 recorded when the market was at its nadir in 2001. However, much of this fall is due to the rapid completion of the eight Project 636 submarines ordered by China from Russia and the cancellation of the U.S. Navy's Advanced Seal Delivery System (ASDS). This reflects the current instability of this sector, in that events in a small number of programs can have a disproportionate effect on the sector totals.
