MSW management in Malaysia: current scenario and future planning

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generation has increased rapidly in almost every country and most developed countries have managed to reduce this problem through proper waste management practices or techniques. However, this scenario hardly exists in most developing nations like Malaysia, where the daily production of 17,000 tonnes of MSW is of concern. Most Asian countries have MSW generation growing at 3 - 7 per cent annually (3 per cent per year in Malaysia). P Agamuthu and S H Fauziah from the University of Malaya report on recent developments.
