If an art museum were ever the optimal place to view contemporary art, it certainly no longer seems so. Many recent artistic approaches do not fit comfortably in museums and galleries: Tino Sehgal (b. 1976) produces an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, that cannot be represented in the marketing materials; the art collective Temporary Services circulates an "exhibit" in the form of a newspaper about the economic crisis; Jeremy Deller (b. 1966) takes a road trip with an Iraqi citizen and a United States soldier, hosting conversations along the way. As the presentation of art seems increasingly dispersed and provisional, a project like the Art:21 television series offers a platform to encounter institutionally celebrated artists outside the typical art museum didactic or artist's talk formulas.
