Aaron Siskind and Louis Sullivan: The Institute of Design Photo Section Project

Between 1952 and 1954, American photographer Aaron Siskind (1903-1991) and a group of his advanced photography students from Chicago's Institute of Design chronicled over sixty buildings designed by renowned American architect Louis Sullivan (1856-1924) to be published as a documentary record of the architect's work. Although the proposed book project was never completed, the Institute exhibited a selection of photographs from this project in 1954. By elegantly reproducing these photographs, including several installation shots, Jeffrey Plank's Aaron Siskind and Louis Sullivan: The Institute of Design Photo Section Project in effect re-creates this important exhibition, contributing a noteworthy case study that broadens a growing theoretical dialogue between photography and architecture.
