The Collective Economy Recent Progress

Over the past years, the collective economy in Kien Giang has progressed well. The Kien Giang co-operative alliance has worked with the relevant levels of local government in the province to consolidate and develop the local collective economy. Following the Party's policy on "continuing to reform, develop and enhance the efficiency of the collective economy" in 2003, the Kien Giang collective economy has received special attention in its development. The Provincial Party Council and the Provincial People's Committee brought this policy about by bringing in a number of action programmes and plans. Accordingly, ineffective co-operatives were dissolved with as many asrn29 economic co-operatives being dissolved. In addition, Kien Giang is keen to develop new co-operatives, with 23 new ones being established so far. Newcomers to the province have helped greatly. For example, Tan Thanh Cooperative (in Tan Khanh Hoa Commune, Kien Luong District) is headed up by an agricultural engineer.rnTo support co-operative economic development, Kien Giang Province People's Committee has issued two decisions on financial support for co-operatives to buy machinery and build irrigation systems to develop production. From 2003 to 2005, the banks lent VND20 billion and the provincial state budget provided VND5billion. With these soft loan sources, farming cooperatives are able to invest in the infrastructure to assist with increased production and reduce production costs by using collective irrigation measures, soiling, plant protection, technical applications and plant supply.
