Status of The Joint Future Theater Lift (JFTL) Technology Study

The US rotorcraft community was focused during 2005-2010 on in-depth design studies and analysis as part of the Joint Heavy Lift (JHL) program. The US Air Force subsumed JHL into the JFTL requirement. In response to an inquiry byAHS, the Air Force provided this update. Joint Future Theater Lift (JFTL) is the latest evolution of requirements for the United States' next generation intra theater airlifter. Currently, the C-130 aircraft is unable to meet medium-weight armored vehicle size or weight requirements while C-17 aircraft cannot meet landing area requirements for unimproved landing areas, and, finally, rotary-wing aircraft lack the payload and range to meet JFTL requirements.
