Rear underrun crashes involving heavy vehicles have the most tragic consequences. This paper describes the concept of a special energy dissipative rear under-ride guard. A dynamic model of a car-to-truck collision was built where the truck had been equipped with such a guard. Simulation research of this model was made. The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of linear and non-linear characteristics of stiffness and damping on the collision course. Maximal value of the car deceleration during the collision was chosen as the major criterion of the bumper quality. The analyses confirm that the proposed bumper, in spite of the concept's simplicity, can be a very effective way of providing security during such a car-to-truck collision.
