Every so often, something jars my memory of the Depression. I recall my mother's stories about eating oatmeal seven days a week for years, and how she walked to school through the snow in paper shoes, into which she stuffed additional papers to staunch the flow of water. For the middle-aged man who has forgotten what it is like to be hungry, a 900-page tome explaining the decade-plus nightmare of the Great Depression seems an unlikely reading topic.
