Q: Could you explain ONR's multi-disciplinary "science of autonomy" effort in general terms and say why it's important? A: We are looking at those far-reaching elements of unmanned systems in all of the Navy's multiple domains - surface, air, undersea, land, space, even cyber - and getting our scientists working together to go after the really big challenges. We're beyond the simple challenge of "how do I keep a vehicle on course?" We're focusing on that "thinking" piece, such as how does a vehicle know how to operate in an unstructured do-main and understands an environment that it's never seen before.
