PROPOSED FAA SMALL UAS RULES AIMED AT INCREASING FLEXIBILITY, BOOSTING SAFETY

Under new rulemaking proposed by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, small drones would be able to fly at night and over people and will do so with a new unmanned aircraft traffic management system. Flying drones at night has been a popular request ever since the FAA began allowing waivers to its Part 107 rules in August 2016. In fact, according to an AUVSI analysis, 92 percent of the requests for waivers were for night flights. "The proposed rule allows drones to fly at night without a waiver, if the operator has received appropriate training, completed approved testing, and if the drone is equipped with anti-collision lighting," Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said in January in announcing the proposed rules. The lighting she mentioned would have to be visible for three miles, according to the rule.
