On 5 June 1944 General Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe, faced arguably the most critical decision of World War Ⅱ: to postpone Operation Neptune-the code name for the amphibious assault phase of Operation Overlord, and the largest amphibious invasion in history-or proceed under marginal conditions.
