VIP Polymers has been awarded a UK patent for a cast-in rubber gasket corner joint designed to reduce the risk of tunnel segment cracking during installation. The company said that a 'compliant compressible corner' gives consistent load performance along the entire perimeter of the tunnel segment gasket. This eliminates the risk of a build-up of pressure at one or more of the gasket's corners during installation, which could contribute to segment cracking. Kryton International buys Cementec Vancouver-based Kryton International, manufacturer of crystalline concrete waterproofing, announced its acquisition of Calgary-based Cementec Industries, a concrete additive company for the construction, oil and gas industries. Kryton said this acquisition demonstrates its commitment to innovation while complementing its existing lineup of smart concrete waterproofing solutions. "Hard-Cem, the integral concrete hardening admixture developed by Cementec, is an award-winning innovation which provides concrete with unmatched resistance to abrasion and erosion. With this admixture, concrete floors and infrastructure last up to six times longer than untreated concrete. As a result, costly repairs and the inconvenience of shutdowns can be avoided." Herrenknecht to employ refugees Herrenknecht has taken in its annual set of apprentices. Among the 56 this year and, the Germany TBM manufacturer has hired five refugees for the first time. The new hires are training for occupations such as mechatronics engineers, industrial, structural and machining mechanics, electronics engineers, industrial business administrators, specialists for metal technology, technical product designers or IT specialists.
