Industrial Safety Accident and occupational Disease Prevention in Tunnelling

Collaboration between entrepreneurs, employees, client and the Suva (Swiss National Accident Insurance Fund) is showing a positive outcome: Although the number of persons employed in Swiss tunnelling has doubled since the beginning of the NEAT projects in 1996, the number of fatal industrial accidents has not increased. Since the start of the project 12 years ago, there have been 7 fatal accidents on the Gott-hard Axis, 3 of them in conjunction with wheeled and track-bound vehicles. As far as driving operations are concerned there has been only 1 fatal accident. The accident risk in tunnelling sank from at the time some 400 incidents per 1,000 employees and year to 229 in 2007.This signifies a drop in excess of 40 %.
