CREG signed two Gripper TBMs to Beirut Water Supply Tunnel Project

On July 17,2015, the Italian construction contractor CMC and TBM manufacturer CREG signed a procurement contract of supplying two GripperTBMs with a diameter of 3.5 m each for the LB-Greater Beirut Water Supply Project in Lebanon.The project development objective is to increase the provision of potable water to the residents in the project area within the Greater Beirut region, including those in the low-income neighborhoods of Southern Beirut, and to strengthen the capacity of the Beirut Mount Lebanon Water Establishment in utility operations. The project includes three tunnels with a total length of 23.9 km.The geological conditions are very complex and result in challenging requirements forTBM design and manufacturing, such as: small curve radius, back loading for disc cutters, 360 ° rock bolt supporting, rock strength of up to 170 MPa, tunnel gradient ranging from 3.3% to 4,97%, and an automatic shotcrete system.
