Construction start for S-Bahn Tunnel Gateway Gardens, Frankfurt

On the approx. 35 hectare site of the former American military housing estate Gateway Gardens in close proximity to Frankfurt Airport, a new city quarter is being developed with office and conference buildings, hotels, gastronomy, specialist shops and local shops. When the new quarter is complete, up to 18 000 people should work there. The 4 km long "S-Bahn" urban rapid transit link to Gateway Gardens is part of the infrastructure development programme "Frankfurt Rhein Main plus", which is being implemented by the State of Hesse, the region, the City of Frankfurt am Main, the Rhein-Main transport combine and the DB AG. It comprises the construction of an rapid transit line between Frankfurt-Stadion and the Frankfurt Airport regional station, with about 50% running underground, as well as the building of a new underground station at Gateway Gardens.This will provide the new city quarter a direct link to the Frankfurt inner city. The new line will cut through the city forest, pass under the federal main road B 43 and autobahn A 5 north of the Frankfurt intersection in a tunnel, leading into the existing airport tunnel. Until now, Gateway Gardens has only been accessible by public transport by bus from the regional station; in the future, S-Bahn trains will run every 15 minutes.
