Pipe Rating: A New Approach to Collection System Rehabilitation

Located in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Asheville (pop. 68,984) is a destination point for many across the United States. It is home to numerous tourist attractions and the mountains, with their outdoor activities, and fall leaves add to the appealing nature of this area. Asheville is a diverse city full of history and, like many others across the United States, it is a city with an aging infrastructure. Created by the state legislature in 1962, the Metropolitan Sewerage District of Buncombe County (MSD) is responsible for the collection and treatment of wastewater generated in the greater Asheville area. The 40 mgd wastewater treatment plant was originally placed online in 1967. Prior to that date, virtually all the wastewater collected in the region was discharged directly into the local rivers untreated. In 1990, MSD took over the additional ownership and maintenance of the local collection systems.
