A streamlined type approval process could save bodybuilders and converters more than £10 million per year, according to the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The association has worked with the DfT (Department for Transport) and the VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency) to develop an alternative National Small Series approach, claimed to deliver a 15-fold reduction in the complexity of approving commercial vehicles. More than 55,000 multi-stage-build vehicles are registered in the UK each year. Many of these could now be approved through this alternative, says SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes.
