Any method of reducing emissions and road congestion, as in the recently announced truck platooning trials (TRL to lead platooning trial', TE October, p5), should be explored. However, there are a number of technical and operational concerns about platooning to address, including: the security and integrity of the data links between vehicles in the platoon; the alertness of drivers in the trucks that follow the lead vehicle; other road users' awareness of the platoon's existence; how platoons will form and disintegrate; and rewarding the lead vehicle, which would not see the same fuel-saving benefits as the trucks following it.
