The novel, curved-roof double-deck trailer brainchild of Somerfield fleet engineering controller David Batty (Transport Engineer April) has inspired a big Birmingham-based parcel carrier to modify a fleet of 50 double-deckers along similar lines. The bluff front faces of Business Post's 4.88m-high (16ft) double-deck step-frame trailers are being made much more aerodynamically efficient by a retrofitted roof panel that slopes down towards the front. All that is lost is dead space above a single layer of 1,9-metre-tall roll cages on the trailer's neck section, behind which there is a 9.15m-long lifting deck. Business Post's general manager for transport, Kevin Webb, asked trailer manufacturer Don-Bur of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire to taper trailer roof height down to four metres at the front bulkhead, in line with the top edge of the tractive unit's air deflector.
