The Euro-4 exhaust emission limits that begin to come into force next October could spark a revival in Caterpillar diesel engine sales in the European truck and bus market. Last month the US-based construction-equipment and diesel-engine giant sprang a surprise by announcing that Euro-4 versions of its commercial vehicle engine range, spanning seven to 15 litres, are under development. Arch-rival and fellow US-based diesel-engine maker Cummins, which sells far more truck and bus engines than Cat in Europe, has yet to reveal its Euro-4 engine line-up. There have even been reports that the 10.8-litre ISM Cummins engine could be dropped in Europe over the next two years.
