Further controversy over the relative merits of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) has been stirred up by diesel engine-maker Cummins with claims that bus operator trials show that its new SCR-equipped Euro-4 engines are at least 10 per cent more fuel-efficient than their Euro-3 counterparts. This is despite the greater swept volume, power and torque of the new engines and is much better than had been expected. Cummins' own forecast when the engines were unveiled at the Birmingham CV Show in April was a fuel economy gain of seven per cent (Transport Engineer May).
