Only just about acclimatised to the applications of a European standard for ambulance specification, the ambulance fleet managers of Britain's National Health Service are having to deal with a grand rationalisation scheme. Mergers are cutting the number of ambulance operating areas from 29 to 12. And while management teams are grappling with this reorganisation (it began in July) orders for new ambulances have plummeted. So deep was the uncertainty at a summer Harrogate conference of ambulance trusts that most manufacturing specialists saw no point in taking part in the concurrent exhibition.
