Despite recent efforts by truck-makers and their franchisee! dealer networks to raise maintenance standards, they often still fall far short of the expectations of operators and indeed of operator-licensing authorities. This was the central message to emerge from a packed IRTE event in Preston, Lancashire last month, arranged to mark the official launch of the IRTE's Maintenance Supplier Assessment guide (Transport Engineer June). As with the IRTE guide to roadworthiness best practice, much of the groundwork on this maintenance supplier guide was done by the North Western Goods Vehicle Maintenance Liaison Committee, an energetic group of fleet engineers with strong SOE IRTE links. The committee is chaired by IRTE council chairman Chris Grime, principal fleet engineer at Lancashire County Council. Outspoken north western traffic commissioner Beverley Bell is a keen advocate of the work of the committee and in particular of the Maintenance Supplier Assessment.
