The number of fatalities in road accidents in Britain fell to a record annual low last year. Figures published last month by the Department for Transport (DfT) reveal that 2,538 people were killed in road accidents in 2008, 14 per cent fewer than in 2007. This is not only the lowest annual total since collection of these data started in 1926 but also the biggest percentage drop in a single year.
