HP Steps Up to Departmental Scanning

Hewlett-packard enjoys universal recognition in the world of digital imaging, yet until recently, it simply didn't offer professional-grade document scanners. The company's old top-of-the-line ScanJet 7450C scanned fewer than 10 pages per minute (ppm) ― just shy of the bottom-rung workgroup (10- to 20-ppm) class. This left the Sender 9100C (a networked scan-to-e-mail device) and higher-end LaserJet MFPs (digital copier/printer/scanners) as the only HP equipment suitable for serious business scanning. With the June release of the ScanJet 8200 series, HP is finally filling the void in its lineup, adding two flatbed scanners for up to legal-size paper with auto document feeders (ADFs), duplex support and document-imaging-class performance. The ScanJet 8250 is an $899 workgroup model that captures 15 ppm, while the ScanJet 8290 is a $1,499 departmental model that captures 25 ppm. Our tests focused on the top-of-the-line 8290, which includes an awesome software bundle with both TWAIN and ISIS drivers, a full version of Kofax Virtual ReScan (VRS), NSI OneStep capture software and a handful of popular mainstream software applications.
