After reading your news article on the Kate Shelley High Bridge ["UP Raises Replacement for Key Iowa Bridge," page 14, September], I was reminded of the October 1957 article in Trains called "The Girl They Stopped the Trains For," [pages 42-48]. It was written by Edward H. Meyers, a Boone, Iowa, rail historian. I was fortunate to 'get a driving tour of the area from him nearly 20 years later. He said, unknown to Kate Shelley, Chicago & North Western trains had been halted at the perimeter of the 1881 storm as a precaution, so the image of a speeding express being stopped just in time has grown up as folklore.
