Eighty cars and 14,400 hp were blasting across Indian country north of Bernalillo, N.M., at 60 mph in 1973. The Locotrol Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway train had three SD24s on the front and three in the middle. Crossing a 256-foot timber pile trestle, the front locomotives began to rock violently. As the lead locomotive reached the other side, it uncoupled, but managed to stay on the track. The other two locomotives fell on their sides and plowed a deep, long furrow into the bank of a small cut.
