California's Santa Maria Valley lies just inland from the Cen-tral Coast, 260 miles south of San Francisco and 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles. San-ta Maria, a Santa Barbara County city of about 100,000 on U.S. Highway 101, is the valleys economic hub. A century ago, the valley was one of the states most produc-tive oil-producing areas, and that oil boom triggered the building of the Santa Maria Valley Railroad. Extraction of crude oil outpaced the building of pipelines to move it to refineries, and railroads were the bene-ficiaries, much as they are today in the movement of crude from the Bakken For-mation in North Dakota, Montana, and Saskatchewan.
