CO-LOADED UNIT TRAINS

As an interim solution to running unit trains before McCoy was built, Cooperative Agricultural Producers ran "co-load" trains on the Washington & Idaho. The difference between shuttle and co-load trains is that a shuttle remains a complete unit train from origin to destination, while co-loaded trains are broken into pieces and loaded at different elevators before being recombined and delivered to the destination as a unit. Under the co-load program, a 110-car unit train would be interchanged at Marshall, Wash., and the railroad would deliver cuts to the cooperative's elevators in nearby towns, where loading would begin immediately.
