A The answer is simple economics. At the time of its 1948 sale, No. 4501 may have been the only Ms Class locomotive remaining without a stoker. A letter dated June 30, 1950, from B.C. Gunnell to M.R. Brockman states that 74 of the 182 Ms Class engines were still on the roster. Among the full fleet, 10 had been retired prior to the start of World War Ⅱ, another six retired prior to No. 4501's sale to the Kentucky & Tennessee Railway, and an additional 92 after the sale of No. 4501 and prior to June 30, 1950.
