Metro-North, LIRR, contract for a PTC network

Two commuter railroads are set to spend about $428 million to create positive train control systems from scratch for their New York-area lines. On Nov. 12, New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority approved contracts with a Bombardier Transportation- Siemens Rail Automation joint-venture to install PTC hardware and software along MTAs Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road lines to comply with the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008. The act mandates PTC on passenger railroads. According to a "staff summary" of the bidding process and recommendation for awarding the contract, the Bombardier-Siemens venture will create four systems for the central back office, wayside, communications, and train-board systems with each railroad. The systems will be compatible with Amtrak's ACSES II train control.
