A North Carolina tech company is using the latest in mapmaking software to help police and fire departments know where they're going if they have to go near a railroad right-of-way. John Cease, president of Clear Track Ahead, tells Trains that the idea behind the company is to provide first responders with printed and digital information related to a railroad route, particularly in rural areas where road access and up-to-date information is often limited. Cease, a former Morgantown, W.Va., police chief, and his wife, Susan, made their first maps for the West Virginia Railroad Maintenance Authority in 2005 and offered to map the authority's South Branch Valley Railroad as a prototype for their business.
