Dramatic Dunsmuir

Location: Dunsmuir, Calif., is the gateway to Northern California's scenic wonders and a great train-watching spot. It is located at milepost 322 on Union Pacific's important Interstate 5 corridor, linking California with the Pacific Northwest. The town is home to about 1,500 people, yet it has no traffic lights or parking meters. The city's motto, "Home of the Best Water on Earth," comes from the fact that nearby Mount Shasta's lava layers filter the city's water, precluding the need for additional filtration or water treatment. Along the historic district on Dunsmuir Avenue are three water fountains, all of them running around the clock.
